During his 11 terms, Democrat John Tanner never received less than 62 percent of the vote, even running unopposed in 2008 when McCain handily carried the western Tennessee district. But Tanner is retiring, and now embodies a deep fear within the Democratic Party that longtime incumbents would leave GOP-leaning districts, essentially ceding the seats to the Republicans. The front-runner for the GOP nod is Stephen Fincher, who boasts a biography that could not be better suited for his demographic.
